Before the Paling of the Stars
J. Edmund Hughes
Set to a text by Christina Rossetti, the handbells add color, and the composer cleverly sneaks in the melody of What Child is This to lend a traditional flavor to this new Christmas piece.
Before the paling of the stars,
Before the winter morn,
Before the earliest cock crow,
Jesus Christ was born:
Born in a stable,
Cradled in a manger,
In the world his hands had made
Born a stranger.
Jesus on his mother’s breast
In the stable cold,
Spotless lamb of God was he,
Shepherd of the fold:
Let us kneel with Mary maid,
With Joseph bent and hoary,
With saint and angel, ox and ass,
To hail the King of Glory.

Everything She Touches
Joan Szymko
The composer's creativity never ceases to amaze. She discovered the Wiccan text for this piece when researching the triple goddess, Brigid, for a Celtic ritual Imbolc (Candlemas) choral presentation. Wicca relies heavily on ancient Celtic symbols, beliefs and celebrations) Her notes explain: The Goddess Triad archetype is found in many ancient Indo-European cultures, as well as in some mythologies of Africa and Asia.
She is the woman who weaves the night sky
Watch her go see her fingers fly!
She is the weaver and we are the web
She is the needle and we are the thread.
Watch her go see her fingers fly!
She changes everything she touches
and everything she touches changes.

The composer tells us the piano plays the role of the Goddess -- flying, weaving, touching and changing the seasons of our lives. It is indeed a special piano part requiring a fine player. The vocal parts, by comparison, are quite easy.

High Flight

Karen Robinson
The poem was written by a young pilot in 1941—it has been called the most famous aviation poem ever written.
POEM
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds—and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I’ve topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
The composer is very in tune with the message of the poem—an inspired piece.

Iraqi Peace Song

traditional Iraqi song, arr. by Lori Tennenhouse (based on a vocal setting by Norwegian performer, Knut Reiersrud)
The song is a lullaby, that universal culture of feeling shared between mother and child. Koowu

Maryam Khoury
In Arabic, Koowu means strength. As a child, Maryam Sameer Faheem Khoury’s father told her stories about the difficulties he experienced growing up in Palestine. Koowu is about how different her life would be if her father had not moved to the United States. The text of Koowu is symbolically about a caged bird who longs to fly away and find freedom. The modality of the melody hints at the composer’s roots; the addition of a dumbek (drum) adds its own authenticity to the ethnic leanings of the piece. A colorful, unique addition to women’s repertoire.
