Potter’s Clay [level: Difficult]
Paul Fowler
| Sharon Hansen Choral Series
voicing: SSSSAA | catalog number: SBMP 860 | duration: 4:10
| price: $1.70
accompaniment: a cappella
A fascinating piece for the advanced women’s choir. The text by Naomi C. Rose was inspired by Tibetan culture; the potter’s clay is likened to one's life as it changes day to day. The piece opens with the intonation of a mantra, the latter becoming the thread that dramatically ties the piece together.

accompaniment: piano
A great piece for men bolstered by an energetic, sea-rolling piano part.Verse one of the text, a Salt Water Ballad by the English poet John Masefield, sets the tone for this dramatic piece about the love of the sea.- POEM -I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,And a grey mist on the sea’s face and a grey dawn breaking.

Sednalo e Djore dos [level: Difficult]
arr. Sara Shakliyan
voicing: SATB | catalog number: SBMP 514 | duration: 3:05
| price: $2.40
accompaniment: a cappella
The Bulgarian/American composer has chosen a fun-filled popular folk song from her native land to set for the adventuresome choir. The Bulgarian text is quite repetitive and the pronunciation easy since the vowels are pure as in Italian with the exception of one word. Fast and dance like, the piece starts innocently and ends in a giant flourish.

Vivos Voco [level: Difficult]
Joan Szymko
voicing: SSAA | catalog number: SBMP 615 | duration: 5:40
| price: $2.20
accompaniment: piano, handbells
The text consists of Virtutes, literally, "moral virtues," the name given to the short statements inscribed (primarily in Latin) on church tower bells in medieval times. Bells rang outward, chasing away the evil spirits that were believed to hover over the rooftops, and upward, as prayers to the heavens. Not only were church bells rung to ward off evil spirits, but to protect the faithful from storms, fires, human enemies and disease.VIVOS VOCO I call the livingFLEO MORTUA I cry for the dyingMORTUOS PLANGO I wail for the deadCONSOLO VIVA I console the livingDISSIPO VENTOS I disperse the windsCOMPELLO NUBILA I drive away the overcast of the skyThe composer has provided great drama with handbells ringing high above the choir, as well as the piano doing its best to be imitative of bells. A very dramatic piece that is excellent for the large choir.
