Paul Carey

Paul Carey studied composition with Alfred Blatter, Herbert Bruen, Ben Johnston, and Eugene Kurtz, and harp with Shirley Blankenship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mr. Carey's graduate studies were at Yale University where he studied with David Mott. In 1999 Mr. Carey founded Vox Caelestis, a professional women’s chorus. In 2005 he announced his departure as music director in order to pursue composition more fully and in order to fulfill commission orders. His Rise Up, Emma Lazarus was the winner of The New York Treble Singers 2003 composition competition and was premiered in New York City in March of 2003. Esta Tarde, mi bien (This Evening, my love) was the winner of the Cambridge Madrigal Singers International Composition Competition and was premiered at the McDowell Colony in May 2004. He has also recently completed a new treble arrangement of Daniel Gawthrop's Sing me to Heaven, one of the most popular choral folios of the last ten years. During the summers of 2002- 2004 Mr. Carey was invited to participate in summer music institutes at Lehigh University, working with fellow composers Libby Larsen, Bob Chilcott, Steven Sametz, as well as conductor Nicholas Cleobury and The Princeton Singers to develop new choral repertoire. Mr. Carey's compositions have been featured as All-State choir selections and have also been sung at MENC and ACDA conventions at the state, division, and national level. Mr. Carey's website can be viewed at www.paulcarey.net
