I see this carol as a scene: Mary sits in the dark when light gently breaks in the room as the angel Gabriel reveals himself and slowly unfolds his wings. (The opening phrase is meant to convey this.) The rest of the piece is essentially a quiet waltz of profound, inner joy between the angel and the maiden.

Silent Night

This setting adds some new drama to the beloved carol. Starting with the sounds of wind, followed by the toning of a handbell to announce "all is calm," the harp joins in to set the stage for the carol. A children's choir or soloist could participate in the first verse; the audience is included in a final humming of the melody; the choir could move to a new position or process out on this final verse.
