The provocative text is brought to colorful life with soaring melodies, passages for both the women's and men's sections to shine, canonic moments, and all the way, close attention to textual meaning. The poem by 19th century English poet George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann Evans) is worth a read -- note: the sections in brackets were not used in the musical setting. I see this carol as a scene: Mary sits in the dark when light gently breaks in the room as the angel Gabriel reveals himself and slowly unfolds his wings. (The opening phrase is meant to convey this.) The rest of the piece is essentially a quiet waltz of profound, inner joy between the angel and the maiden.
