Before the Paling of the Stars by J. Edmund Hughes
Set to a text by Christina Rossetti, the handbells add color, and the composer cleverly sneaks in the melody of What Child is This to lend a traditional flavor to this new Christmas piece.
Before the paling of the stars,
Before the winter morn,
Before the earliest cock crow,
Jesus Christ was born:
Born in a stable,
Cradled in a manger,
In the world his hands had made
Born a stranger.
Jesus on his mother’s breast
In the stable cold,
Spotless lamb of God was he,
Shepherd of the fold:
Let us kneel with Mary maid,
With Joseph bent and hoary,
With saint and angel, ox and ass,
To hail the King of Glory.

Dancing Tree by Nancy Gifford
Dancing Tree is a fanciful and exuberantly happy piece for young voices. The verse begins,
In my garden grows a tree
Dances day and night for me,
Four in a bar and sometimes three,
To music secret as can be.
Taking its cues from this simple but inspired poetry, the piece alternates between duple and triple meters, with light waltzing sections, a Latin dance, and finally a grand valse. Three lyrical melodies are woven together throughout the piece; they are sung separately, in pairs, and all together at the end. In between, a sprightly theme in minor mode appears, accompanied by syncopated rhythms in the piano and flute. All in all, fun to sing, and delightful to hear.

High Flight by Karen Robinson
The poem was written by a young pilot in 1941—it has been called the most famous aviation poem ever written.
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds—and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I’ve topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

The composer is very in tune with the message of the poem—an inspired piece.

Jubilate Deo by Láslzló Halmos, arr. Barbara Harlow
The SATB version of this piece has been a long-time best seller in the SBMP catalog. At the request of Nancy Parker who recorded it with her choir, a treble version was created. Wonderful antiphonal melodies will lend well to spacing the two sections of the choir a bit apart for a dramatic effect. This is one of those rare a cappella pieces that works really well for treble voices.

Koowu by Maryam Khoury
In Arabic, Koowu means strength. As a child, Maryam Sameer Faheem Khoury’s father told her stories about the difficulties he experienced growing up in Palestine. Koowu is about how different her life would be if her father had not moved to the United States. The text of Koowu is symbolically about a caged bird who longs to fly away and find freedom. The modality of the melody hints at the composer’s roots; the addition of a dumbek (drum) adds its own authenticity to the ethnic leanings of the piece. A colorful, unique addition to treble repertoire.

Two German Chorales Gastoldi/Decius/arr. te Velde
series: Robert J. Ward
Robert Ward: "When I think of music for young voices, I think of essentially conjunct melodic movement, limited vocal range, diatonic harmonic and melodic structure, and a supportive yet independent accompaniment. For this octavo, composer Rebecca te Velde has taken two very singable 16th century German chorales and breathed into them a fresh and vibrant keyboard accompaniment. These two chorales are perfect vehicles for teaching beautiful tone, intense legato singing, and accurate intonation. I have used them with the Stillwater Boys Choir and give them my highest recommendation."
